CLEVELAND — Both Guardians pitchers connected to an alleged sports gambling scheme are now in custody.
A few days after Guardians starter Luis Ortiz was brought into custody, closer Emmanuel Clase was arrested by FBI agents Nov. 13 shortly after landing in New York, according to the Department of Justice .
Clase had been in the Dominican Republic. He is expected to be arraigned Nov. 13. On Nov. 12, Ortiz entered a plea of not guilty .
Both pitchers are facing up to 65 years in prison for a series of federal charges that include wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery, among others. The alleged scheme involves Ortiz and Clase purposefully throwing balls in certain situations in order to win bettors fraudulent bets.
