Waterloo Region will receive a portion of millions of dollars in newly announced provincial funds for traffic-calming measures in school zones that previously used speed cameras.
There are 28 school zones in Waterloo Region with ASE cameras.
The 11th-hour Road Safety Initiatives Fund announcement came Thursday, a day before automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras were to be taken offline by municipalities under the Building a More Competitive Economy Act.
Speed cameras came under fire by Premier Doug Ford in early September after cameras were repeatedly cut down in Toronto. He told the Toronto Board of Trade the cameras were a “cash grab” and he would force municipalities to take them down if they didn’t do it willingly.
