KALAMAZOO, MI — Jae Slaby, 32, will be the youngest member on the Kalamazoo City Commission, once sworn in on Nov. 17.

Slaby, who uses they/them pronouns, has some ideas of how to be a positive force for the city.

“The thing that really drives me right now is ... I want to be the city’s honorary night mayor,” Slaby said.

“Night mayor” is not an official city position, but rather emphasizes Slaby’s desire to activate Kalamazoo’s nightlife.

That means more events, entertainment and dining, available to residents around the clock, Slaby said.

“If you really want one thing in order to make downtown thrive, you need to diversify and multiply activities,” Slaby said.

This is what attracts and keeps young professionals, families and retirees in the area, Slaby said.
