COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina lawmakers are considering a bill that would bar anyone under 21 from buying THC-infused hemp products, as federal action threatens to severely limit the industry nationwide.

Hemp-derived THC drinks, vapes and edibles are widely available in South Carolina with virtually no state oversight, or age restrictions. While some sellers might have their own age requirements, nothing in state law prevents a teenager from purchasing them.

Supporters of adding an age restriction say the products should be regulated in the same way as alcohol or tobacco.

"We need this legislation. We need to protect consumers. We need to support good actors and legitimate businesses," said Zach Serrins, co-owner of The Carolina Dream and member of the Hemp Beverage Alliance.
