TYLER, Texas — Cases of whooping cough are spiking, especially in Texas. The Lone Star State is seeing 10 times as many cases as it did in 2023. However, an East Texas doctor says they’re seeing only minimal cases locally.

Advanced symptoms of whooping cough include violent coughing fits that can cause vomiting, as well as difficulty breathing. Experts say there are several factors behind the rise in cases.

Dr. Shiva Reedy, a pediatrician at UT Health East Texas, said immunization is the best way to protect against the illness. Parents are encouraged to make sure kids are up to date on their vaccines.
