A fast-moving Alberta Clipper storm is set to bring a messy mix of snow and slippery roads to parts of the Northeast this weekend with widespread gusty winds, making travel tricky and keeping the cold firmly in place.

According to the National Weather Service, light ice accretions are expected in portions of the Southwest Adirondacks, Upper-Hudson Valley in New York, Southern Green Mountains in Vermont, and much of New Hampshire from the  late Saturday afternoon, Nov. 15, through the early morning hours on Sunday, Nov. 16.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to cover these areas, with officials urging, “Use caution while driving in these areas, especially on elevated and untreated surfaces.”

Icy conditions and slick travel are predicted for northeastern New York and northern New England Saturday night, Nov. 15, into Sunday morning, Nov. 16.

AccuWeather meteorologists warn that a blast of cold air spilling out of Canada will dominate the Northeast’s weather through the weekend. This will set the stage for bursts of snow and a wintry mix as the storm sweeps across the region from Saturday into early Sunday.

Gusty winds of 40 to 50 mph will rip through much of the Northeast, with the strongest winds expected from Saturday evening into Sunday night.

Behind the clipper system, another round of cold air is forecast to arrive on Sunday, ushered in by brisk west-to-northwest winds. This will help transition rain showers to snow showers across Pennsylvania and New York.

AccuWeather notes, “Several inches of snow are likely to accumulate within the lake-effect bands, with the highest accumulations occurring where the bands persist or overlap," especially in central New York and northwest Pennsylvania.

High temperatures will range from the 30s and 40s in the interior to the 40s and lower 50s along the coast through the weekend and into early next week.

While this cold snap is less intense than earlier in the month — when temperatures fell 10 to 20 degrees below historical averages — meteorologists expect some days to run 5 to 10 degrees below average.

Drivers and residents are urged to be alert for slick spots and rapid weather changes.
