GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Family and friends continue to rally behind a Glendale mom who went from severe back pain to being permanently paralyzed from the chest down in a matter of hours.

The incident happened about two years ago, and now Stephanie Van Emst has a new goal: getting behind the wheel once again.

Van Emst has three children, and she is pushing to regain independence and control. She says she can never walk again after a sudden spinal cord injury changed her life forever. But Van Emst could drive again if she had a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Loved ones put together a fundraising event Saturday, featuring a photo booth and silent auction, to help raise money so she can buy the special car she needs.
