A racial discrimination lawsuit that seeks to halt the Akron Police Department's captain promotion exam accuses the city of disproportionately allowing White lieutenants with less than two years of experience to take the exam, but not Black and minority lieutenants with the same experience.

Lt. Michael Murphy, who is Black, accused the city of racial discrimination when it twice denied his application to take the exam. Other officers, including Chief Brian Harding and one who pleaded guilty to OVI charges in 2016 , were allowed to take the exam despite not meeting the two-year requirement, the lawsuit alleged.
