For more than a decade, a grassroots Winnipeg event has been quietly changing lives — not through speeches or policy, but through music, community and connection.

Women Helping Women returns Nov. 22 at 477 Westwood Drive, bringing together musicians, speakers, community supports and Manitobans who want to stand with those affected by domestic violence.

The event was founded in 2013 by Winnipeg singer-songwriter Stacey James, who says the idea came during one of the most difficult turning points in her life.

“It started with a thought after leaving a relationship,” she said. “I was sitting on the floor of my empty condo, and it hit my head. It was like — I need to do something.”
