A 30-year-old Minnesota man died last week in a waterfowl hunting accident in North Dakota.
Christopher Hendricks, of Champlin, drowned while hunting in the Eszlinger Waterfowl Production Area in rural McIntosh County last Wednesday, as he attempted to rescue a dog that became caught in a thin sheet of ice as it worked to retrieve a bird from a slough.
According to reports, Hendricks jumped in the water to help the dog, which swam about 100 yards to reach the bird, and started showing signs of distress on his way back to shore with the dog. A friend went into the water to try to help Hendricks but eventually returned to the shore when he feared for his own safety, after Hendricks went below the surface.
