A 13-month-old boy from Highgate, Birmingham, suffered a heart attack and severe injuries after accidentally ingesting caustic soda, mistaking it for milk. Sam Anwar was playing in the living room when he crept into the bathroom, where his mother was cleaning. In a tragic turn of events, he grabbed a white bottle containing the toxic substance and drank it. The incident resulted in catastrophic burns to his mouth, tongue, lips, and airways. Sam lost half of his tongue and was unconscious for three minutes after suffering a heart attack. He spent two months in intensive care at Birmingham Children's Hospital, where doctors described his case as unprecedented for someone so young. Now 18 months old, Sam is back home but continues to face significant challenges. He is currently being fed through his stomach due to the injuries sustained. His father, Nadeem Alshameri, has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical expenses, as the family explores specialist treatment options abroad. Nadeem, 37, recounted the harrowing moment, stating, "The Mrs was cleaning in the bathroom and he had been playing with his siblings and toys in the living room. Within a few seconds he had popped in the bathroom... He grabbed it and thought it was a bottle of milk and started drinking it." The family is now faced with the uncertainty of Sam's treatment. Nadeem explained, "Some doctors said they will do the surgery but others say it's too early to do. They don't know what to do with him." The family is deeply concerned about Sam's safety, particularly as he cannot swallow and is at risk of choking. Nadeem expressed his worries, saying, "I'm worried about him every day." As they navigate this challenging situation, the family hopes for a successful treatment plan that will allow Sam to recover and lead a healthier life.
