Cockroach infestations and long lockdowns are why some Perth judges are now giving criminals lighter sentences.

In their view, the conditions inside prisons are inhumane.

It means violent WA offenders are being let back onto the streets earlier — often without rehabilitation.

On Tuesday, a carjacker was given less time for attacking Armadale grandfather Ken Cook, partly due to the conditions inside Hakea Prison.

Coen Dorizzi, 33, dragged the 89-year-old from his car and repeatedly pushed him to the ground when he tried to defend himself, all in front of his terrified wife, in November 2024.

“She couldn’t help physically at all. And at my age, I was past going the full 10 rounds,” Cook said.
