Macomb County circuit and probate courts Chief Judge James Biernat Jr. not only has been reappointed chief of those courts and the two county-run district courts but also 38th District Court in Eastpointe.

Biernat was named to the two-year posts Friday by the Michigan Supreme Court as part of the high court’s appointment of chief judges in courthouses throughout the county and state.

He was named to the Eastpointe post due to the high volume of cases at the court where Judge Kathleen Galen, who also served as chief, oversees a caseload that should require nearly two judges, based on state data. Biernat’s relief of Galen from administrative duties will allow her to focus on resolving cases, officials said. As chief of circuit, Biernat’s caseload is reduced because of the extra duties.
