Newark Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert early Tuesday after gunfire was detected near 875 South 20th Street.

Officials said the alert activated around 6:20 a.m., prompting officers to rush to the scene.

When they arrived, police located several shell casings in the area.

A search of the building and surrounding property did not turn up any victims.

Authorities believe the suspect fled before officers arrived. The motive for the shooting remains under active investigation.
