EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI – East Grand Rapids residents could get a chance to vote on a controversial Gaslight Village development project under a petition that’s been submitted to the city clerk.

A resident-led group called Gaslight Village Responsible Development submitted the petition to the city on Nov. 5. The petition seeks a referendum election that would allow voters to decide on the project, which has faced pushback over its size and scope .

David Decker, who helped organize the petition, said the group’s goal is to allow citizens to decide the fate of the significant development rather than leaving the decision to the city commission, which moved the project forward last month.
