MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Tennessee Governor Bill Lee’s office says the state will appeal the ruling made by the Davidson County Chancery Court that the National Guard could not be deployed in Memphis.

“Memphians know their city is facing a violent crime emergency that the state must address, and we’re confident higher courts will ultimately recognize this as well. The State will appeal, and the Tennessee National Guard will continue to operate as part of the Memphis Safe Task Force while the case is on appeal, per the judge’s order,” spokesperson Elizabeth Johnson wrote in a statement.

The court found that there was neither a “grave emergency,” “disaster,” nor a request from local leaders for the federal deployment, which is required by law.
