PORTLAND, Maine — In the world of sports, goalies are often considered the backbone to any team. At Cheverus High School, Ellie Skolnekovich leads her teams in more ways than one.
This fall, the senior won a state championship in field hockey, after already becoming a three-time state champion in girls' hockey.
"It felt amazing to go out with a bang. We have had a great run, and we went undefeated in our season, which was amazing," she said, reminiscing on her final high school field hockey season.
While Ellie's known for her skill in net, people know her name before the starting whistles even sound.
"How many of the teams have a goalie that sings the national anthem before every game?" said Cheverus High School girls' hockey Coach Scott Rousseau.
