BEAUFORT, N.C. (WITN) - After serving as Carteret County sheriff for almost two decades, Asa Buck now has his eyes on running for the 1st Congressional District next year.

“I’ve been the sheriff of the county for 19 years, and sometimes you’ve got to strike when the opportunity presents itself,” Buck said.

Buck made the announcement Tuesday morning and is seeking the Republican nomination, citing recent political events and the redrawn congressional map as key factors in his decision.

He says he supports the Trump administration’s overall decisions, especially on immigration and drug enforcement policies, which he and his sheriff’s office also strongly uphold.
