Detroit City Council voted 9-0 Tuesday to uphold the Office of Inspector General’s September decision to suspend demolition contractor Gayanga and its owner, Brian McKinney, from doing work with the city pending the final outcome of its investigation into the source of contaminated dirt, Bridge Detroit reports.

The Inspector General found contaminated dirt at 42 of 47 sites where Gayanga filled in demolitions. The dirt exceeded state pollution standards. Of those sites, 62 percent were found “unsafe for direct human contact," Bridge reports.

McKinney has claimed that he purchased all the dirt from a city-approved vendor who obtained it from the Northland Mall redevelopment in Southfield. He has insisted he's done nothing wrong.
