NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Federal workers who live in Newport News can apply for a one-time tax extension to help them recover from the economic hardships associated with the recent government shutdown .

“We understand the difficulties that many federal workers are facing during this time,” said Treasurer Marty Eubank. “Our goal is to offer some relief and support to those who have been impacted by the shutdown, ensuring they have one less worry during these challenging times.”

The extension is for the upcoming taxes due on Dec. 5. Taxpayers must ensure that all their accounts are current to qualify. They also need to provide written proof of their furlough status or the hardship caused by not getting paid during the shutdown.
