LINCOLN, Neb. —
President Donald Trump vowed he would shutter the U.S. Department of Education, and this week, his administration took steps toward that end, a move the Nebraska State Education Association sees as damaging.
"This is just another example that they don't have students' or families' best interests in mind," Tim Royers, the president of NSEA, said. "We need to do everything we can to fight this."
Ultimately, the power to close the agency sits with Congress, but Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the changes she announced this week would help establish feasibility and show Congress it isn't necessary.
