HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - As the rainy season continues, East Oahu residents are trying to stop homeless people from breaking into a large storm drain.
City officials recently replaced a gate to the access point for the Waialae Nui Stream near Malia Street after the one before it was torn out, allowing homeless people to crawl in.
“This is where they’re left alone the most, and so in order to gain access to these places, they’ll remove gates, they’ll cut locks,” Waialae-Kahala neighborhood board chair Christian De Quevedo said.
The pattern of unhinged gates around the creek has exposed it to vandalism and litter for years.
“They (the homeless) mostly get left alone cause they’re pretty unseen,” De Quevedo added.
