The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been urged to consider making an assessment of the potential merits of enabling older people with ‘significant mobility needs’ on Attendance Allowance to access the Motability Scheme. Unlike Personal Independence Payment (PIP), there is no mobility element attached to Attendance Allowance .
PIP claimants awarded the higher rate of the PIP mobility component can transfer some or all of the payment to lease a new car, wheelchair-accessible vehicle, scooter or powered wheelchair through th e Motability Scheme. There are currently 815,000 people across the UK using the scheme, including nearly 88,000 living in Scotland.
