BISMARCK — North Dakota officials are alerting some horse owners that their animals may have been exposed to an outbreak of equine herpesvirus linked to rodeo events in Texas and Oklahoma.

The outbreak involves both equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), the respiratory manifestation of the disease, and equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM), a more rare neurological manifestation of the disease, according to a report released by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture, which stated there have been no confirmed cases of EHV-1 or EHM in North Dakota horses.

The report said several EHM cases have been confirmed in Texas and Oklahoma associated with rodeo events, with numerous reports of additional cases and horse deaths pending investigation.
