EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - Officials at North Hopkins High School cut the ribbon on a new auxiliary gym and storm shelter.

This area was hit by some devastating tornadoes a few years ago, and since then, the community has been working hard to rebuild, including the addition of multiple new storm shelters in the area.

The one that opened today here at North Hopkins will be a gym for students to play or practice but also a storm shelter with a large capacity in the case of bad weather.

EMA director Nick Bailey says a shelter like this is a necessity for the community.

“This provides an area of refuge, safe refuge, for people to get into. Especially our students, our staff here in Hopkins County, in our school system,” Bailey says. “Tornadoes are very destructive. And these facilities, the
