AUSTIN, Texas — At least five Austin ISD employees have been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the district's teachers' union.
Education Austin said the employees who have been detained include a teacher, a bus driver and a food service employee. The employees work at the Hart, Pickle, Perez and McCallum campuses, as well as the Nelson Bus Base.
Trasell Underwood, the vice president of Education Austin, told KVUE on Thursday that during a recent meeting with district leaders, they were told that four people were detained attending court appearances, while the fifth was returning from a funeral in Mexico.
