Meet Cpl. Carlton, a special deputy at the Lane County Sheriff's Office. Corporal is a goldendoodle whose job as a comfort canine is to provide mental health support in the sheriff's office.
Lane County Sheriff Carl Wilkerson swore Cpl. Carlton in so he can start patrolling the halls of the sheriff's department and chasing away the blues. He'll be there to offer comfort, calm and connection as part of LSCO's staff health and wellness initiative.
He's named for Deputy Carlton Smith, who was killed his first night of solo patrol duty with LSCO in 1965. Working Dogs Oregon, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the welfare and effectiveness of working dogs across the state, trained and gave Carlton to the sheriff's office .
