Farmington Hills Mercy beat Byron Center in five sets, 25-27, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17, 16-14, behind 30 kills and 21 digs from Kate Kalczynski during Thursday’s Division 1 state semifinal at Kellogg Arena.
Kaelyn Easton dished out 61 assists and 20 digs. Ella Andrews had 17 kills and Cree Hollier had 15. Maya Zarow had 29 digs.
Byron Center had 16 kills from Caitlin Harton, 15 from Mallory Johnson and 10 each from Addie VanTol and Kenna Deters. Raya Kooiker had 26 assists with Lele Froysland adding 25.
Byron Center had a 12-11 lead in the final set before Kalczynski came through with back-to-back kills. Mercy then got within a point of ending it before a VanTol kill to tie the score at 14-14, but Mercy then took the next two points to end it.
