The City of Eugene hosted a candlelight vigil Thursday evening in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance. Eugene Mayor Kaarin Knudson issued a proclamation recognizing the day, followed by a performance by the Queer Choir.

The national day of remembrance began in 1999 to honor the life of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was murdered in her home. Today, the vigil commemorates the lives of transgender people lost to violence.

The event was held at the Farmers Market Pavilion on E. 8th Avenue.
