ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Orangeburg County leaders say a new courthouse is on the way, calling the project long overdue because of major issues inside the current building on Russell Street.

County Administrator Harold Young said the existing courthouse has structural problems and a failing outer membrane that leads to frequent leaks and flooding. He said the building also lacks space for the growing number of judges in the circuit and contains outdated technology. Narrow hallways, he said, can create unsafe situations when inmates, families, and victims cross paths.

Young said courthouse staff often cite overcrowding, a lack of work space, and limited parking as ongoing challenges.
