LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A former South Carolina lawmaker who recently agreed to plead guilty to child sexual abuse material crimes now faces new charges.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue announced that Robert Brown May III, also known as R. J. May, has been charged with three counts of failing to file and pay state income taxes.

The state agency said May didn't file state income tax returns from 2022 to 2024, despite having a gross income exceeding $323,000 during that period. Authorities said he owed more than $14,000 in state income tax. If convicted, he faces up to a year in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.

In September, federal prosecutors said R.J. May agreed to plead guilty to multiple charges related to a child sexual abuse materials investigation.
