The fire-ravaged Hotspur Press will be partially rebuilt following the summer inferno which nearly destroyed one of Manchester’s architectural gems.
Fire crews raced to the Georgian survivor late in the afternoon of June 23. The blaze consumed what remained of Medlock Mill, which fell into disrepair after being vacated for decades following its closure as a printing press in 1996. Attempts to redevelop the building never gained traction.
But a 2023 bid to use its façade in a 35-storey student accommodation tower from Manner won planning permission in May 2024, suggesting brighter days were ahead.
An application to list the building held up the process until January 2025, when Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy rejected the bid. Even then, building work still did not start,
