OLMSTED COUNTY, Minn. — Olmsted County is actively addressing concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS.

These persistent man-made chemicals are found in everyday items like food packaging and textiles, and can accumulate in the environment and human body, potentially causing health issues.

Olmsted County says it is involved in both voluntary and state-mandated environmental monitoring for PFAS at the Kalmar Landfill and the Olmsted Waste-to-Energy Facility. The county is also exploring treatment options to reduce PFAS levels in landfill leachate and collaborating with waste organizations to better understand and manage PFAS in the waste stream.
