The Transportation Safety Administration has proposed a new rule to charge travelers $18 to use airport security checkpoints if they don’t have a REAL ID or passport.
The $18, non-refundable fee would go towards the “costs of providing the modernized alternative identity verification program,” according to the proposal, which was published in the Federal Register on Thursday. The fee will allow travelers to access TSA checkpoints for a 10-day period.
It remains unclear when the fee will go into effect. TSA said the $18 fee was calculated based on a report that analyzed the program’s expected costs and population.
However, even paying the $18 fee “does not guarantee an individual will be granted access” to the airport, according to the proposal.
