JAMES CITY — After more than 50 years in operation, Bacon Street Youth and Family Services has permanently closed due to a lack of funding. The nonprofit organization’s last day providing services is today.
Bacon Street has been helping teens and young adults struggling with mental health challenges and substance abuse issues and their families since 1971. Executive Director Kim Dellinger said the organization’s board of directors made the difficult decision to close last month.
The organization relied on support from the community through contributions and grants to fund its operations, but donations had dried up over the last year, she said. Since January of this year, community support had been down 50%.
