NEWARK - Obalaji Baraka, the older brother of Mayor Ras J. Baraka who currently works in the Newark Recreation Department, was arrested on Thursday for violating the terms of his probation stemming from a domestic violence charge from 20 years ago.

Obalaji Baraka, 58, was sentenced to one year's probation on Nov. 19, 2004 after being charged with third-degree aggravated assault in a domestic violence case, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

In 2006, Obalaji Baraka was “sentenced to violation of probation,” a spokesperson from the county prosecutor’s office said. He was arrested yesterday on a warrant for that 2006 violation of parole.
