DES MOINES, Iowa —

Iowa officials reported the first influenza-related death of the season.

In a release Friday, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services said the individual was an older adult from southwest Iowa.

State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse encouraged sick Iowans to stay home and consult their doctor about vaccinations.

"Holiday gatherings bring us together with family and friends we may not see often," Kruse said in a statement. "To keep those celebrations, our workplaces and our communities safe and healthy, I encourage everyone to stay home when feeling sick and to talk with your healthcare provider about vaccination."

Officials said state data shows flu activity remains low and hospitals are seeing a low number of patients.
