LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) faces a major $188 million budget deficit, which may impact several schools next year in major ways, including layoffs.
Superintendent Brian Yearwood delivered a proposal to the district's Board of Education addressing the shortfall on Thursday.
Among the recommendations , two schools would be closed while several others would be consolidated or relocated due to “low enrollment and costs.”
“We know this will be difficult, it’s difficult for our staff. It’s difficult for our families, but it is a necessity for the long term future of our district and most importantly for our students,” Yearwood said during a Friday news conference.
Hundreds of students and at least 165 teachers and staff would be impacted by the changes, he said,
