Light rain is expected across Massachusetts Saturday morning, but the brief soaking is just the opening act for a major weekend temperature plunge and the chance of a snowy mix on Sunday.

While the light rain is supposed to be widespread, the heaviest amounts will be along the South Coast in the Hyannis and New Bedford area according to the National Weather Service . But don’t expect big totals as precipitation will generally be under a quarter of an inch.

The rain should taper off between noon and 2 p.m. as the cold front sweeps across the state as highs reach the mid to upper 40s.

Specifically, high temperatures are expected to reach 40 degrees in Springfield and Boston, 47 degrees in Worcester, 44 degrees in Pittsfield and 48 degrees for the Cape and Islands.
