A Minnesota man has been convicted of using fake military records to claim more than $140,000 in veterans' benefits.
Michael Robin Wicker, 39, was convicted in U.S. District Court on Friday of wire fraud, mail fraud, using a false military discharge certificate, and using fraudulent military medals.
According to court documents, Wicker falsely claimed to have been deployed to Iraq in 2005. He also claimed to have received a Purple Heart medal and the Prisoner of War medal.
In reality, Wicker never served in any branch of the military. Records placed Wicker in Michigan during the years he claimed to be deployed to Iraq, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
