At Perry County Animal Rescue , the sound of barking and purring fills a facility that may soon fall silent. The nonprofit shelter, which has operated since 2009 without government funding, is facing a critical shortage of volunteers — one so severe that closing the doors has become a real possibility.
“We have only a third of the volunteer foundation we need,” said Paula Current, director of Perry County Animal Rescue. “Our greatest need is not about finances. While donations are great, without the essential volunteers to do the work, no amount of money matters.”
