LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) — Thanksgiving Day poses the highest risk for home cooking fires in the United States, with a 388% greater chance of fire than any other day of the year, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

MJ Lierman with Lincoln Fire and Rescue said the increased activity in kitchens during the holiday makes fire prevention crucial for families preparing their meals.

“Keep an eye on what’s cooking and minimize the distractions,” Lierman said.

Lierman emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors, which provide early warning if cooks become distracted.

“Make sure smoke detectors are working. If you do get distracted then you will have the opportunity to get it taken care of,” she said.
