NEW LONDON, Conn. (WFSB) - Emergency work has started to make repairs to the Second Congregational Church as engineers warn of a potential collapse if no action is taken.

The church, located at the corner of Broad and Hempstead streets , has been condemned due to structural concerns near the spire. Fences now surround the building and roads in the area are closed for approximately six weeks.

Engineers say work is needed to prevent a catastrophic collapse, specifically filling visible gaps in the mortar at the base of the spire, which is in rough shape.

The church is owned by Engaging Heaven Ministries, the same group that owned the First Congregational Church, which collapsed in early 2024.

The situation has created concerns for nearby businesses during the busy Thanksgiving week. G
