WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) - Washington’s city manager is resigning.
City council will hold a special meeting on Wednesday to accept Jonathan Russell’s resignation.
Russell has been the city manager for the past seven years.
WITN has been unsuccessful in contacting Russell or Mayor Donald Sadler.
In a Facebook post, incoming councilman Nick Fritz says the city is millions of dollars in debt. Fritz claims the current city council met recently, and behind closed doors, they asked Russell to resign, allowing him to collect a severance package.
One of the items on the Wednesday agenda is a budget amendment for the city manager’s payout.
