Salem police arrested a man suspected of intentionally setting a south Salem home on fire Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 300 block of Southeast Khartoum Street around 10:16 a.m., dispatch records show. The home is just off Kuebler Boulevard in the Liberty area.

Neighbors initially reported seeing white smoke without flames, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Carrara said. The smoke quickly turned black as the home’s windows began to break from the fire.

Firefighters were able to quickly get the fire under control in about 20 minutes, Carrara said. No people or animals were injured.

A total of nine vehicles and 21 firefighters responded, Carrara said.
