A 25-year-old Shell Rock man was killed instantly “when he slipped from a manlift at the Farmers Co-op Elevator in Waverly and fell 94 feet to the concrete ground floor,” opens the lead story in the Nov. 25, 1975, issue of the Bremer County Independent.

The accident occurred at the end of the day when two employees tried to step on the manlift at the same time and one slipped off. According to the article, that was the second fatality that year with the belt-type manlift, with the other fatal injury occurring when a rural Shell Rock man hit the top of the lift.

Also on the front page we see that the Bremer County Jail sustained its third fire this year, with a mattress set on fire by the same prisoner who started a mattress on fire there in September.
