MADISON (WKOW) -- It's a common sight on the Beltline Highway: drivers hitting over 70 mph when the speed limit is 55.
27 News did an exclusive ride-along with Madison Police Sgt. Joseph Engler on how he aims to reduce reckless driving.
"I'm going 78 and he's getting out of my sight, so I'm going to turn on my lights and we're going to catch up to him," said Engler about a driver speeding on the Beltline. "He's still moving and he's moving good."
Engler issued that driver a speeding ticket.
But, giving out hundreds of tickets a day isn't what Engler and his team want to do.
"I'd rather make meaningful stops that truly are impactful that drivers truly are driving dangerously than a bunch of 'ticky tack' little ones," said Engler.
Last Monday, the Beltline saw one of its worst crashes
