CLEVELAND — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is awarding Stark County a $7.5 million grant to support the ongoing construction of its new jail.

DeWine's administration is earmarking $24 in grants through the Ohio Jail Safety and Security Program he helped pass through the Ohio General Assembly in 2021.

"Jails are expensive to build and expensive to keep up, so this program helps ease some of the financial burden at the local level," DeWine said. "This program has already made a major impact at jails across the state by helping create safer environments for those working and residing at these facilities."

Stark County said in a social media post last week that foundation work had begun on the new jail wing.
