A 19-year-old man was seriously injured late Monday, Nov. 24, when his Jeep sideswiped another vehicle, slammed into an overpass, overturned, and burst into flames in Holtsville.
The crash happened around 11:20 p.m. on southbound Nicolls Road at the Division Street overpass, according to Suffolk County Police.
The driver, identified as a Patchogue man, was heading south in a Jeep Cherokee when he sideswiped a 2019 Toyota Highlander, then veered into the overpass support structure, police said. The SUV overturned and caught fire moments later.
Officers from Highway Patrol, the Canine Section, and the Sixth Precinct pulled the man from the burning wreck while battling the flames. Holtville Fire Department and EMS crews assisted at the scene.
He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries. The Highlander’s driver — a 52-year-old Stony Brook man — was not injured.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Detectives ask anyone with information to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
