BAD AXE, MI — A Bad Axe funeral home director is accused of bilking 55 victims out of a cumulative six-figure fund.

Terry A. Kaufman, 71, on Monday, Nov. 24, appeared before Huron County District Judge Julienne M. Ferris for arraignment on the following 39 felonies:

One count of conducting a criminal enterprise, a 20-year maximum penalty

Two counts of embezzlement by an agent of between $20,000 and $50,000, 10-year maximum penalty

Five counts of embezzlement by an agent of between $1,000 and $20,000, five-year maximum penalty

31 counts of conversion of funeral contracts, five-year maximum penalty

The Michigan Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting the case and alleges Kaufman embezzled and converted funds he received for prepaid funerals and funeral insurance policies.
